What It Means To Dress Like That Girl - The Lazy Way

The Lazy Girl Way is all about getting the most out of life the easiest and simplest way. Dressing like that girl, the lazy way, simply means optimizing your outfit assembling process to save you time and energy. It’s about feeling confident that no matter what you decide to wear, you’ll always be feeling and looking your best —without the added stress and mess.

I used to spend so much time in the morning trying to create an outfit that I liked that would make me feel good and confident. I’d tear apart my closet, searching for the perfect pieces just to try them on and realize my eyes had deceived me. And it is in fact—not an amazing outfit. Then in my defeat, grab a sweatshirt with yoga pants and run out the door— already 15 minutes late.

I was so tired of not feeling confident in what I was wearing and second-guessing what I wore throughout the day. I struggled to find outfits that felt true to my personal style and made me feel good about myself. I was constantly making outfits that I didn't end up wearing and destroying my room in the process, wasting my time and energy. But this all changed once I learned the 8 basic styling secrets that transformed me from looking like a lazy girl into embodying that girl.

After implementing these principles, I’ve been able to make every outfit look more elevated, stylish and put together — effortlessly. With these styling tips, I can trust that I always look good without wasting unnecessary time and energy in the morning. I not only feel more put together, but I feel confident knowing my style aligns with what I love and serves me well. You can achieve this too, the lazy way.

We want life to be easier in every area, including our style. If this approach saves you time in the morning so you can sleep in or skip the hassle of shuffling through your clothes, then this post has done her job! Let’s get started!

The 8 Styling Secrets to Look Like That Girl Effortlessly

1.Matching Sets

Low hanging fruit here, but it’s number one on the list for a reason! This is the easiest way to make a complete outfit that looks stylish and put together in record time. This takes the guesswork out of what you are gonna wear, saving you time and energy before heading out the door.

2. Monochromatic Colors

Utilizing a similar color palette can make assembling outfits easier as well! Right now, neutrals are incredibly trendy and are the easiest option to follow. Incorporating different shades of the same colors can make your outfits really dynamic while still maintaining a stylish look, all while avoiding the time consuming process of trying to figure out what pieces and colors pair well together.

3. One Pieces

Dresses, jumpsuits and rompers are great for keeping the dressing drama out of your routine. When you wear pieces like these, people will think you spent a lot of effort on your look when you really just threw it on. Adding accessories and a great hairstyle will truly pull this look together!

4. Matching accessories ( my favorite tip!)

My favorite way to pull an outfit together is with matching accessories. This transforms any outfit you throw on into a cohesive and elevated look—  even if it's just a sweatshirt and sweatpants. I always try to at least coordinate my shoes with my purse and/or sunglasses. If you want to go the extra mile, think about matching your jacket, shoes, purse, belt, and sunnies for a truly cohesive look. This is why most of my accessories are black, they go with everything!

Bonus tip:

Matching jewelry is a great way to do this! Having matching metals can take your outfit from great to truly chic! With every outfit, I wear gold necklaces with matching rings and earrings. I even bought black sunglasses with little gold detailing on the sides to tie my metals and accessories together!

I've recently seen a trend where people match their shirt with their shoes to make outfits. While this can look great, I’ve found that this can be tricky and unrealistic—seeing as most of us may not have shoes to match all the colored shirts we own. I don't know about you, but I personally don’t own a pair of green sneakers to match all of my green tops. This is why I opt for matching all of my accessories instead! I find this method to be way easier, less time consuming, and more realistic for everyday girlies like us.

5. Styling vs. Wearing

The difference between styling clothes and wearing clothes lies in the level of intentionality and creativity applied to an outfit. Here's a breakdown:

Wearing clothes: This refers to simply putting on garments without much thought or effort into how they come together as a complete outfit.

Styling clothes: This involves a more intentional approach to creating an outfit. Styling clothes can take a casual look and transform it into something more fashionable and put-together. It can include:

  • Creatively combining different pieces

  • Adding accessories to enhance your look

  • Considering how different elements of an outfit work together

  • Expressing personal style and flair

This concept can make a casual sweatshirt and jeans turn into something really fashionable. This is where creativity and flair come into play if you're looking for fun ways to spruce up an everyday outfit! This is also where you can add and express your own unique style while using normally ordinary clothes.

6. Hair

This tip relates to the difference between styling and simply wearing an outfit. Typically, your hair is the first thing people notice when they see you. If you have your hair styled well, oftentimes you can get away with not putting much effort into your outfit and still look put together.

How you wear your hair can also give some personality to your outfits. A slick bun can say that you are clean, confident and mean business. A jaw clip ponytail can say that you are more casual and laid back, but you’re ready for anything that comes your way. Even braids can give off the impression that you’re sporty or really creative.

Ask yourself: What vibe do I want to give off? What do I want my hair to say about my style or personality? How can I use my hair to add some unique flare to my look?

Personally, I love any hairstyle that incorporates a jaw clip. It’s easy and versatile, ensuring whatever hairstyle I do use with the clip is going to make my hair look good. I can switch easily from a ponytail, to a half updo, or a clip twist depending on my mood and outfit for the day.

7. More Than Pieces

If you have a lot of clothes but can't seem to put together outfits that look good, you may have a lot of great pieces that just don’t pair the best together. If this is your case, consider adding some essential filler pieces to your closet. I find that the basics are always safe to go with. For example, if you have a lot of random shirts but are having a hard time finding bottoms to go with them, a pair of high waisted, straight leg blue jeans may be your new favorite piece. Take some time to assess your existing wardrobe and identify key pieces needed to create complete, cohesive outfits.

Bonus tip:

Pinterest is a great place to look for outfit inspiration! Searching for things like “outfits with blue jeans” or “ basic outfit staples” can point you in the right direction with what pieces to look for when you’re trying to build great outfits.

8. Flattering Fits

Figuring out what looks best on YOU can make your outfits not only look amazing, but feel amazing! Not every style or trend may work best with your body type, and that's ok! We don’t all look the same (and we don’t all want to look the same!) So we need to take some time to figure out what looks best on YOU. What kind of neckline, rise or silhouette looks the most flattering for your body? The next time you go shopping, take a few extra minutes to explore different cuts and rises to see what makes you look your best. Does a square neckline look better or does a v-neck? Do high-waisted jeans flatter your body best or do low-rise jeans? What about body-con or a-line dresses? What accentuates your features in a flattering way that looks the best on you? You can make this into a fun shopping date by asking a trusted friend to help you out!

1. Makes torso look shorter and is not the most flattering

2. Looks best for my height and frame

3. Not the best but with the right styling I can make it work for me

Bonus tip:

Take pics of the outfits you like for next time! When you are in a rush and have no idea what to wear, you can sort through your pictures for inspo!

Feeling and looking your best can be an incredible source of confidence, allowing you to navigate life with your head held a little higher. I know it has been for me! Once I learned these 8 style secrets and implemented them into my wardrobe, assembling great outfits has never been more simple and stress free! Your style can say a lot about you —  it may even be someone's first impression of you —this is why it’s so important! But it no longer has to cost a fortune or cause a headache.
